Susann co-led the preparation of ADB’s new Operational Plan for Health 2015–2020, which aims to double ADB’s health sector operations by 2020. She also led the management of the Regional Malaria and other Communicable Diseases Threats Trust fund, which supports regional upstream investments, and which piloted innovative activities to advance malaria elimination and communicable diseases control. Besides the strategic work, she focuses on increasing ADB private sector health investments, strengthening digital health infrastructure in Asia and the Pacific, advancing health impact assessment and resource mobilization for infectious diseases and health security related investments. Susann believes in the need for close dialogue between the public and private sector to find innovative solutions for the changing health needs of Asia and the Pacific’s population. Susann also works on innovative financing for health and launched the first thematic health bond at ADB in 2017.

Susann worked for research institutes, NGOs (on gender, health, human rights), in public and private medical institutions in the Philippines, India, Germany and the USA, including Duke University, Baylor College, University of Washington, University of Heidelberg, and University of the Philippines.  Her clinical experience is in General and Transplant Surgery, Emergency and Intensive Care, Dermatology, and Tropical Diseases including infectious diseases. She has been involved in lecturing and mentoring from early on in her career. She always tried to link her medical profession with a broader development perspective. Susann was appointed as adjunct associate professor at National University of Singapore, LKY School of Public Policy from 2016-2018.

Susann, a German national, holds a Medical Doctor degree and a PhD in medical science from the University of Heidelberg in Germany, and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of the Philippines.  She is board certified in emergency medicine, attended a fellowship program in dermatology and tropical medicine in the Philippines, and joined post-graduate courses in adult medical education and didactics, and in health system planning and financing in developing countries.
